Pallet Construction Types
Understanding pallet construction helps you choose the right pallet for your material handling equipment and operations.
Stringer Pallets
The most common pallet design using 2x4 or 3x4 lumber stringers running the length of the pallet. Typically 2-way entry but can be notched for 4-way entry.
Advantages:
- Lower cost
- Easy to repair

Considerations:
- •2-way entry (unless notched)

Block Pallets

Advantages:
- True 4-way entry
- Stronger construction
- Better for automation
Considerations:
- •Higher cost
- •More complex to repair
ISPM-15 Heat Treated Pallets
International Standards for Phytosanitary Measures No. 15 (ISPM-15) requires wood packaging materials used in international trade to be treated to prevent the spread of invasive pests. Heat treatment is the most common method.
Requirements:
- Wood core temperature of 56°C (132.8°F) for 30 minutes minimum
- Official HT stamp with country code and producer number

Frequently Asked Questions
Have questions about pallets? Find answers to common questions below.
What is a GMA pallet?
GMA stands for Grocery Manufacturers Association. A GMA pallet is the 48" x 40" standard pallet size used throughout North America, particularly in grocery, retail, and general warehousing. It accounts for about 70% of all pallets in the US.
What is the difference between 2-way and 4-way pallets?
2-way pallets can only be accessed by forklifts from two opposite sides. 4-way pallets (block pallets or notched stringer pallets) allow forklift entry from all four sides, offering greater flexibility in handling and warehouse operations.
Do I need heat treated pallets?
Heat treated pallets are required for international shipping to comply with ISPM-15 regulations. If you are shipping domestically only, standard pallets are usually sufficient. For export, always use pallets with the HT stamp.
How long do wood pallets last?
A quality wood pallet can last 3-5 years or 15-20 trips in a typical supply chain. With proper care and repair, some pallets can be reused much longer. Plastic pallets can last 10+ years.
Can damaged pallets be repaired?
Yes! Most damaged wood pallets can be repaired by replacing broken deck boards, stringers, or blocks. We offer pallet repair services and can refurbish your damaged pallets at a fraction of the cost of new ones.
What is the weight capacity of a standard pallet?
A standard GMA wood pallet can typically support 2,500-3,000 lbs of static load and 2,000-2,500 lbs of dynamic load. Heavy-duty pallets can support significantly more. Always verify capacity for your specific pallet type.
Should I choose wood or plastic pallets?
Wood pallets are cost-effective for one-way shipping and open-loop supply chains. Plastic pallets are better for closed-loop systems, clean environments, and long-term use despite higher upfront costs.
